Welcome to Canada and Welcome to Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW)

At NEW, our settlement programs are directed to assist new immigrants and refugees in the process of making Canada and Ontario their new home. Using a client centric approach, our programs are tailored to address the unique needs of newcomers and their families. Our organization offer settlement services including assistance with government services, English Language classes, Citizenship test preparation and support in accessing health care, education, housing and employment.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR OUR SERVICES?

Whether you’re new to Canada or a longtime resident, you can access our services. They are open to permanent residents, convention refugees, naturalized Canadian Citizens, asylum claimants, international students, temporary foreign workers, and approved Ontario provincial nominees.

Our settlement program services are offered in the following languages: Arabic, Farsi, Mandarin, Bangla, Hindy, Urdu, Punjabi and Spanish.

We offer both in-person and hybrid services, and our office locations welcome walk-ins at:

Settlements Services Include:

  • Individual assessment of newcomer settlement needs and the development of a detailed, personalized settlement plan.

  • Ongoing case management is based on a holistic and collaborative approach and is centred on the newcomer and family’s wellbeing and settlement needs.

  • Information and orientation sessions to help newcomers develop an understanding of life in Canada, Canadian culture and traditions, and their rights.

  • Community connections group sessions focused on civic engagement and volunteer opportunities

  • Group activities about accessible community services in the areas of health, housing, education, childcare, employment, finance, immigration, language learning and legal supports.

  • Help with understanding and completing government forms and applications.

  • Assistance in preparing for the Canadian Citizenship test.

  • Access to French language training and/or French settlement services. Accès à une formation en français et/ou à des services d’établissement en français.

  • Informal language learning support through Conversation Circle activities.

  • Support with issues in relation to ongoing settlement and integration needs of newcomers and their families.

  • Community service programs for women, such as one-on-one and group activities, to assist them in establishing social networks to address isolation challenges and develop the skills needed for employment.

  • Skills training and leadership programs including digital literacy, financial literacy and leadership development and mentorship for newcomer women.

First Month in Canada

We’re here to help you take your first steps to make Ontario your new home. We provide information and support and we can guide you in creating your own “Welcome to Canada” checklist, by helping you:

  • Navigate your new city.

  • Apply for a Social Insurance Number.

  • Find an Employment Resource Centre near your home.

  • Apply for a Health Card.

  • Find a nearby public library.

  • Apply for the Canada Child Benefit.

  • Open a bank account.

  • Apply for a driver’s licence or Photo ID card.

  • Register your children in school.

  • Get information about finding a job.

  • Find English classes

  • Find French language training and/or French settlement resources.

  • Find a community health centre.

On going settlement support

Our friendly and knowledgeable staff provides one-on-one information and referral services and settlement counselling on how to access:

  • Resources that will support you during your initial settlement, such as an introduction to rights & responsibilities, programs and services for newcomers as well as information and support related to managing change and transitioning into your new life. 

  • Workshops and webinars tailored for newcomers.

  • Essential government documents and benefits. 

  • Education and training.

  • Foreign credential evaluation.

  • English language classes.

  • French language training and/or French settlement resources. Formation en français et/ou ressources d’établissement en français.

  • The healthcare system in Ontario and to acquire a Health Card. 

  • Legal and social services.

  • Child, youth and family resources.

  • Community and recreation facilities and services.

  • Shelter, food and clothing.

  • Employment services. 

  • Programs for internationally trained professionals.

  • Community service providers, shelters, health centres, legal clinics, tax clinics, food and clothing banks, social service offices, childcare centres, drop-in programs, language and skills trainings, educational institutions, assessment centres, regulatory bodies, credential evaluation services, bridging programs, employment support services, mentoring programs, co-op programs, volunteer placements, etc.
