English Language Program (LINC) for Newcomer in Toronto

ELP (English Language Program)

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada

NEW offers English Language Program CLB(Canadian Language Benchmark) 1-7.

Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW) has been delivering ELP since 1992. ELP is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). ELP at NEW follows the official CIC curriculum. A certificate is issued to each candidate upon successful completion of each ELP level.

ELP at Newcomer Women's Services Toronto provides a supportive environment for women to learn English. There are classes every weekday for ELP levels 1 to 6, including one class for women aged 55 and over.

These classes offer women a chance to learn about themselves and explore their new country through a rigorous curriculum, skills workshops, field trips and presentations by guest speakers.

  • Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
  • ELP CLB 1-7
  • Seniors ELP Class for women 55+
  • High-quality child care for children 19 months to 6 years of age
  • Welcoming, pleasant and safe place
  • ELP focuses on the 5 most important skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing as well as numeracy.

Students learn how to use English in daily life including banking, shopping, finding a doctor and looking for work. Students also learn about Canadian history, geography, politics and culture.

The program offers workshops on a variety of topics including assertiveness, employment, taxes, housing and parenting skills. Our participants find these skills immensely helpful in their settlement experience.

Prior to registering for classes, prospective students must be assessed for eligibility and language level by the YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre. For more information, please call 416-925-5462 or visit
